We had so much fun these last two weeks, all reading the same book. Since "Big Foot and Little Foot" began their friendship using a toy sailboat, we all made our own. Each evening, we watched one of our teachers read a chapter from the book. On Friday, we gathered in the auditorium to read the last two chapters together. To be continued.....

Our fifth annual Multi-Cultural Festival was so much fun! More than twenty countries were represented by our community. Children had their passports stamped at each destination. Tasty treats and drinks made the day a culinary delight. We have such riches to share with each other.

We are making sailboats with our buddy classes to sail down Mossy Creek, just like Big Foot and Little Foot do (OK, not all of us have a river flowing down the middle of our bedrooms). This week, we will see if they can really sail. One School One Book.

Roosevelt Intermediate School's Eighth Grade Band played for us this week as part of our Music in Our School Month. They showed us some really big instruments and told us how much fun middle school band is. We love seeing our alumni make it to the big leagues.

Superior Court Judge Rosalba Comas read to our fourth graders this week as part of our March reading celebration. She also helped us understand better what a judge's job is like (including an amazing story about the case of the dog Taquito!).

We had a great Math and Science Fair after school last Thursday. Young and old alike learned about sensory bags, straw rockets, fingerprints, cup towers, robotics, chromatography, and risk versus reward.
Thank you to all the teachers and volunteers who helped, and to all the kids and families who participated.

One School One Book is Here!
Everyone gathered in the auditorium to read the first two chapters of Big Foot and Little Foot together.
For the next two weeks, we invite you to join us in reading together at home.
We will record each night's reading for your listening and viewing pleasure. Listen to Chapters 1 and 2 read by our own Washington School Librarian.
We will read the last two chapters together in the auditorium on Friday, March 13.
Ask your children what Hakka-makka-momo means, and if they saw any Sasquatch footprints around school!

Welcome to Nonsense Word Reading in Nonsense Land, where we dress up in things that don't make any sense.
Nonsense words are made-up words that follow English phonics rules — like lat, fim, sheb, and vop. They are not real words, but they are decodable.
Strong decoders understand letter–sound correspondence, blend sounds smoothly, and apply patterns to unfamiliar words.
Nonsense words force students to demonstrate this. That’s why measures like DIBELS include them.

Just how cool is it that our teachers go to students' events?! That's called connection, caring, and going the extra mile, and that is why our kiddos go the extra mile for their teachers, too!

It's math! Ten groups of ten items, one for each day of school we have had so far. Time flies in first grade!

The Washington School Store is run by fifth graders and parent volunteers. Once every two months during lunch, students can purchase various items for $1 or $2. The funds help support the fifth-grade party at the end of the year and a school gift from the graduating class. One of the great mysteries of life is how excited everyone gets about this compelling event!

Do you see how the individual parts of the squirrel relate to each other, and how the squirrel's size in the foreground relates to the details in the background?
Do you notice the symmetrical and asymmetrical balance in form, design, and pattern in the Ancient Greek amphorae (a two-handled ceramic container)?
Both youngsters did a beautiful job demonstrating the concepts of space/size and balance, and then put their hearts into decorating!

🎼 Our Credo ❤️💙💚💛💜🤍🧡🩷🩵🤎
If you ever find yourself stuck in the middle of the sea
I'll sail the world to find you
If you ever find yourself lost in the dark and you can't see
I'll be the light to guide you
We find out what we're made of
When we are called to help our friends in need
You can count on me like one, two, three, I'll be there
And I know when I need it
I can count on you like four, three, two, and you'll be there
'Cause that's what friends are supposed to do, oh, yeah 🎶

Who Do We Love? For Valentine's Day, our PTO presidents surprised every teacher with a box of Hershey Kisses. We are so thankful for what you do!

Does it get any better than having lunch with your teacher? A common happening at Washington School and a great way to really get to know your students.

Make sure you have completed the Visitor Aware Google Form (https://tinyurl.com/4prb39z9) for the Valentine Sing Along this coming Friday morning. Guaranteed happiness!

Our fourth-grade students visited the African American History of Westfield Museum.
Do you know who two famous Westfield residents who were part of the Harlem Renaissance are? Or some of the famous people who visited the Westfield Community Center over the years?
We do!

The PTO Chess Club got off to a successful start last week. A whole lot of first through fifth graders met in our library. Newcomers learn the basics. Experienced players got help from our high school expert. It's not even electronic, and you have to actually talk to your opponent. And use your thinking skills, patience, and decision-making. I love chess!

Dance like nobody's watching; love like you've never been hurt; sing like nobody's listening; live like it's heaven on earth.
