Today, our 1st graders celebrated the 100th Day of School! They completed many fun learning activities using the number 100.

Classes 3O and 3Z had Super Bowl Fun Friday! Ms. O'Leary and Mrs. Zlotnick created various learning activities which students tackled in teams. Each team created a team name, mascot, chant, jersey and matching helmet. The purpose of the day was not only to continue practicing skills in a fun way, but to build teamwork among the classmates. They had to work together to complete activities, communicate with a team leader, and show good sportsmanship behavior. It was an exctiting day of learning!

5A and 3O celebrated World Read Aloud with Live virtual author visits from Claire Noland and Jared Chapman. Afterwards, 5A students shared a special book they chose to read aloud to their younger buddies.

Our 2nd grade students are learning about different kinds of communities, such as rural, urban and suburban. One of the parents, Mr. Perlmutter, from Class 2B was a guest speaker who talked about New York City and the many types of advertising you see in a city environment. Mr. Perlmutter has an advertising background and talked about how words can be so powerful in relaying a persuasive message. This connects well as students are learning how descriptive language is impactful in their writing.

Class 2L welcomed parent presenters, Mr. and Mrs.Khanshab, who shared a special science demonstration of “Elephant Toothpaste”. Mrs. Khanshab showed the young scientists what happens when yeast, warm water, hydrogen peroxide and dish soap are mixed together. Different percentages of hydrogen peroxide were used to cause varied reactions. The students could touch the bottom of an aluminum pan to feel the warmth the reaction caused. It was an exciting lesson for our students!

Our 4th graders are learning to take notes from reading non-fiction text. They are practicing this skill so they will be better prepared for their research project coming up soon.

Our 5th Grade Early Act Club continues with our service projects. This week we are collecting for our SOUPer Bowl Food Drive. All food items will help to replenish the food pantry at Grace Church. Thank you to all the families who are supporting our cause to help those in need.

She is a physician's assistant and she explained to the students some of the tools that doctors use when they are giving an exam. The students were able to see some of these tools up close and also practiced using a stethoscope! It was very cool! Finally, the students examined an anatomical model and saw all the internal organs. It was very interesting. What a great health lesson!

This week our 5th graders Investigated chemistry with sweet delights to explore chemical and physical changes. Thank you to our PTO for sponsoring this enriching program!

Jefferson PTO hosted the 2nd annual Multicultural/Multiethnic Festival this week. It was a fun community building experience for all who attended. There were many families with their children and our staff joining in to support them. It was a tour around the world at Jefferson! Students learned about other countries and cultures and even tasted some delicious food and snacks. Many went home with fun crafts and games. Thank you to our PTO and generous families for hosting this event!

Our 4th graders welcomed Tree Stewards from the 4H Club. Students learned the importance of trees and the many resources they provide for community and environment.

Our 1st graders are learning that air takes up space. In this lesson, the children made balloon rockets fly and learned how compressed air can be so much fun when you release it from a balloon.

Our 4th graders had a great time when the Liberty Science Center came for the "Balls and Tracks" enrichment program. The students learned about physics and explored kinetic energy. Thank you to our PTO for sponsoring this program.
