Due to the forecasted winter storm and the potential for icy road conditions, all Westfield Public Schools will have a delayed opening tomorrow (Tuesday), January 16, to help safeguard our students and staff during their morning commute. Please check your email or consult the Inclement Weather Procedures page on the district website for the delayed opening schedule.

All Westfield Public Schools and offices are closed on Monday, January 15, in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Our 2nd graders enjoyed a Liberty Science Center Backyard Safari program. Students learned about the life cycle of the horned tomato worms (hummingbird moth). They were amazed to learn that not only are the worms green, their blood is green from the tomatoes that they eat. Children will be on the lookout for horned tomato worms in the spring right in our Jefferson Garden since they can be found in NJ. The children enjoyed feeling the spike on the worm's back. They will continue their investigation of life cycles in the spring with our FOSS science curriculum. Thank you to our PTO for sponsoring this program.

We had an assembly program for our 2nd graders to learn about Pedestrian Safety. The students learned about important tips to keep them safe. STOP, LOOK, LISTEN and WAVE. Remember to look both ways and walk with an adult or group. Use crosswalks. Wear bright colors or reflective gear. We encourage more students and families to walk to school when the weather permits. It is good exercise and fun!

Online registration for kindergarten and first grade is open for the 2024-2025 school year! Please share with your friends and neighbors in Westfield who have young learners. https://www.westfieldnjk12.org/article/1395663

Class 3O and 5A Buddies had a challenging activity. They had to build a snowman for their imaginative construction company to sell, staying within the $25.00 budget in materials. After the snowmen were built, buddies then wrote and recorded a persuasive sales pitch to the people of Mobile convincing them to buy their snowman. Students collaborated and had fun with this challenge.

Our teachers and staff participate in regular meetings to learn and grow professionally. At today's meeting, our Security and Safety Specialist Frank Padovano provided updates and answered questions. Afterwards, our school counselor and behaviorist presented on social emotional learning and the impact we have on our students each day. We are here to support our students, not only academically, but socially and emotionally.

Mrs. Haag's 2nd graders wrote letters of gratitude to family and friends. They delivered them to friends who are at school. It was a meaningful and fun activity that helps support their writing skills and connections with others. We are grateful to all of you for being a part of our school community!

Mrs. Bower's 5th grade class wanted to do something special for those in need during this holiday season. Each student brought in food items and together they made 45 lunches to donate towards our Tuesday Lunches program. All lunches were delivered to St. Joseph's Social Service Center. What a great experience for our students! Helping those in need warms our hearts. Thank you to the families for your support and to Mrs. Bower's for her guidance. Happy holidays!

Our intermediate level orchestra performed for us today. The students worked hard over the past few months and they did a great job! Thank you to Mrs. Naylor for working with our musicians.

Third graders are digging deeper into understanding the characters in mystery books. Students are working in small groups to read and share during reading workshop time.

Fourth graders have been developing their realistic fiction stories. It is a long process from brainstorming, planning, drafting, revising/editing and publishing. The final product is always something to be proud of!

Second graders have been working on their personal narratives. Today's lesson was on planning a strong beginning, middle and end to their story.

Our students are enjoying their time in the library with Ms. Harrigan. Starting this week, students are able to take out 2 books! Our 4th graders have been learning about the importance of digital citizenship.

We wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving! May you stay healthy and safe as you visit with family and friends during this long weekend.

Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving!

Many of our students celebrate Diwali. We had guest presenters visit with various classes to share about the holiday and traditions this week. Happy Diwali!

Our students learned about Veterans Day this week. Many students created letters and cards which will be delivered to veterans. Please thank a veteran for their service to our country!

Jefferson 5th grade students went on a field trip to Sandy Hook. Our students learned about the importance of the salt marsh and did several hands-on activities to investigate the nature of the New Jersey coastal area. We thank the teachers for organizing the program and we appreciate the PTO for funding the trip.

Students had a fun day. Thank you to our PTO volunteers for organizing the class parties. Happy Halloween!
