The students in Mrs. Miller's class have been working hard on their multicultural and multiethnic projects. They proudly shared projects with classmates and families!

Our 3rd grade students went to Ellis Island as their culminating event after studying immigration. It was a beautiful day and everyone enjoyed their field trip.

Our 5th graders went to visit Edison Intermediate School today. They walked over with their teachers and then EIS principal introduced himself and the vice principal. Dr. Bolton reiterated the importance of respect for yourself, respect for others, and respect for the school. The school counselor and teachers then helped to organize the students for a tour and Q&A with the 8th Grade Tolerance Peer Leaders. It was a great morning for all.

Our students enjoyed their time browsing the Used Book Sale today. Thank you to the families for donating the gently used books for the sale. It was a great hit! Students were eager to find some books for their summer reading. Thank you to our PTO for providing this experience for our students.

Our spring concert was a great hit! The 5th grade chorus and band students all worked hard with our music teachers, Mrs. Meyer and Mr. Stouffer. It was music to our ears!

Class 5L had a parent presenter on Friday, April 21. Mrs. Cahill shared about her father, Alex's grandfather, who was a member of NASA's Mission Control Team during the Gemini and Apollo missions in the 1960's and 70's. As a part of the presentation, she shared her collection of original pictures from many of the missions. Among the historic artifacts, was a certificate from President Nixon awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom to the team at NASA for their role in bringing the Apollo 13 astronauts home safely. 5L was fortunate to have this experience, which coordinated well with our current Science unit, Earth and Sun.

Happy Arbor Day! Our 1st and 2nd graders participated in an Arbor Day celebration. With the help of the Westfield Tree Preservation Committee, we had a tree planting ceremony. A proclamation was read by our Town Councilman Scott Katz. Our students saw an exciting demonstration of safety measures and the trucks and equipment needed in tree maintenance. We now have 2 new Yoshino Cherry trees on our school property at the corner of Landsdowne and Boulevard. During the celebration, some students shared their poetry about the importance of trees and they sang songs to the trees. Thank you to the teachers and students for a job well done! Thank you to the Township committee and WTPC for sharing in this special day with us.

Mrs. Kosciusk's students had a special guest visit. They learned that Ramadan is the 9th month of the lunar calendar. During that time, Muslims fast as a way to show self control and remember those who do not have enough food or water. On the last day of Ramadan, which is called Eid, families and friends gather to pray, donate to charities, and have a big feast. The students made lanterns to represent the light or good in others.
