Our fifth-grade chorus (entire grade) and fifth-grade band played for our students yesterday afternoon and our parents last evening. It was the debut of our new band teacher, Trevor Sindorf, the return of music teacher Karen Colabaugh, an encore for Gerry Yoselevich, and a new pianist to accompany the chorus. What a pleasure to listen to them sing and play.

This is Skipper. Maggie and Skipper both passed their certification tests at Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dogs. They are both Golden Retrievers and have families who attend Washington School. Every Friday afternoon, one of them visits two classes (they alternate weeks). Last week, second graders practiced their reading skills as Skipper showed off her ability to listen attentively. We love Maggie and Skipper!

What a wonderful Fall Singalong we had last Wednesday. Thank you to all of the parents who came out to support our choristers. And thanks to music teacher Gerry Yoselevich, who has been filling in so admirably for Karen Colabaugh (who returns next Monday, Dec 4). What the Beatles could have done if only they had a ukulele.

The Caring & Sharing committee at Washington School completed another successful Thanksgiving Drive. Each class collected one ingredient (i.e. can of sweet potatoes) to make a Thanksgiving basket for a needy family in our community. Fifth graders sorted, packed, and delivered the 15 baskets to the Westfield Neighborhood Council. Just one way we can show concern for others in our world.

Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving!

Is this GQ’s Man of the Year? No, it is our own Mike Bukowsky being photographed for TCNJ Magazine. For many years, Mr. B has worked closely with Professor Avery Faigenbaum at The College of New Jersey. Together they have presented workshops at conferences on the best ways to teach fitness and strength to elementary students, and have co-published professional articles. Coming out in the spring – stay tuned.

Wednesday afternoon Washington teachers gathered to enrich our learning about Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. Ask your child about Charlie and Mrs. LaRosa!

Now pitching for the NY Yankees, Marie Antoinette, who is neck and neck for the Cy Young Award.

Every fall our first graders learn about community helpers. After practicing as a group, teams of two students schedule appointments with our school helpers to interview them and learn what they do. It is Mrs. Roff's turn today : - )

Who knew that learning balance, postural control, muscle strengthening, coordination, jumping skills, motor planning, endurance, sensory input, and aerobic fitness could be so much fun?

We can't wait for our fall theater productions! Mark your calendars!

Our first assembly of the school year: Westfield Firefighters reminding our first, second, and third graders about fire safety. Ask them which side of your hand you use to touch a door to see if it is warm or hot?

Indescribable joy! Our first-ever Washington Burger Day : - )

Reminder: Schools will be closed on Monday, September 25.

What would Back to School Night be like if we didn't have the Washington School Book Fair happening? Open tonight, too!

Day 5 -- our first graders are already logging onto their Chromebooks and learning to play some math games. Do we have great teachers or what?

There is nothing in the whole wide world like the first day of a new year at Washington School.

Our staff has been busy getting ready for tomorrow's return of our students (Thursday, Sept 7)! https://www.westfieldnjk12.org/article/1230200
