McKinley 5th graders use comic strip pre-writing to paint the picture for their narrative stories and to plan out the sequencing of events as well as character interactions.
Thank you to the Westfield Fire Department for visiting our elementary schools during Fire Prevention Week, sharing important fire safety tips with our students in grades 1-3.
Franklin "Recess Runners" pose for pictures while circling the fields, counting laps by collecting popsicle sticks. Parent volunteers keep track of laps and award "foot charms" to create a necklace. This is a favorite elementary recess activity. Great exercise!
Our 8th grade peer leadership teams at Edison and Roosevelt enjoy team building activities as they prepare to work with 6th and 7th graders.

Wilson students in Ms. Guerra's class conducted a reaction time investigation during science. The typical human reaction time is about 1/4 second. Do you think you could catch a dollar bill between your thumb and pointer finger? Think fast!
Teaming up with the Westfield Human Relations Advisory Committee to write messages of kindness and inclusion during the "Walk the Chalk" event at Jefferson.
McKinley 4th graders in Lauren Zales' class plant garlic (a cold weather crop) & learn about soil , thanks to a Union County grant applied for by paraprofessional Donna Dwyer. On hand for the planting was UC Commissioner Kimberly Palmieri-Mouded & staff from Groundwork Elizabeth.
McKinley students in Ms. Myers' class solve real world problems in Social Studies, working on solving problem of too much trash on the ground, finding lost dogs, and dealing with potential flooding. At this stage of the project, they're building and decorating their models.

Mental health matters! Thank you to WHS SAC Christine Trottere for organizing last month's exhibit, "In Their Shoes", to promote suicide prevention & awareness. TY also to WHS health educator Michelle Spreitzer for arranging "Grief Speaks" presentation for 9th graders on 10/7.
Schools are closed on Monday, October 10. Staff will have an in-service day.
