Happy students make for eager learners (or do eager learners make happy students?)!

Early dismissal on Friday, December 23. Wishing all a restful Winter Break. Look forward to welcoming back students and staff on Monday, January 2.

At this time of year different holidays are celebrated in the homes in our community. We are lucky to have so many families willing to share their traditions with us. After all, where else would you find children learning to play "dreidel" while wearing Santa hats?

In grades 3-5 we use the Words their Way program. This aligns instruction with the five developmental stages of spelling: Emergent-Early Letter Name, Letter Name, Within Word Pattern, Syllables and Affixes, and Derivational Relations. These third graders are hard at work on their weekly "sort" of words.

Did you know... that the Westfield Police visit Washington School every day? Different police officers rotate visits at unannounced times. They walk through the building, double check that all doors are secure, and interact with the children and staff (for example, are interviewed by first graders as part of their community helpers unit). We love our Westfield Police Officers!

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

One of the things that we focus on when helping children learn how to write well is conferencing. Conferences can have a different focus each time, such as goal-setting, strategy, coaching, compliment, assessment and more.

We are so fortunate to have so many parents who are willing to share their cultural and religious heritage with us. We learned about Diwali -- the Festival of Lights. The students listened to a book, watched a presentation and then got to paint sun catchers.
