The 8th grade students in Mrs. Meade's journalism class interviewed me as the new principal of EIS. They asked questions about my professional journey as well as my personal life. I enjoyed being in the hot seat as they peppered me with question after question for the first edition of the 2023-2024 Edison Insider!

EIS staff spent the day learning new instructional strategies. They became experts on on cooperative learning structures, asking higher order questions, and seeking multiple perspectives in alignment with the district's DEI goal in the strategic plan.

Students kicked off the Week of Respect by creating a school quilt. Each patch of the quilt is created by students who write about what makes them unique.

Mrs. Houghtaling's biology class participated in an enzyme lab experiment. They used raw beef liver, which is rich in catalase, in their experiments and observed how changes in pH, temperature, and particle size affect reaction rates.

Reminder: Schools will be closed on Monday, September 25.

The Club Fair was a huge success! Students had the chance to meet the teacher advisors for Edison's clubs and activities for the 2023-2024 school year.

Students in Mr. Wiley's and Mr. Parke's 7th grade science class conducted the Coke and Mentos experiment this week during class. Proper safety gear was worn during the soda eruptions and our custodial crew made sure to clean up afterwards. Sometimes, science is messy.

Last night, the Optimist club celebrated the 2022-2023 Optimist Club Outstanding Teacher, Madame Kate Young. Kate is a highly regarded French teacher at EIS whose love of the French language is contagious. She was joined by Roosevelt's teacher, Andrew Bausch, who was also recognized. Thank you for all that you do for our students, Madame Young!

Madame Young's 4th period French 6 class sits on the rug to share personal stories. They are immersed in the target language as Madame Young responds to every student in French.

Jumping jacks get the blood flowing in Mrs. Zuckerman's period 1 Science class! Students independently move around the room completing various activities to start their morning.

Students in Mr. Wiley's 7th grade science class participated in a dry ice experiment on the first day of school.

Happy First Day of School! Here are a few snapshots from Edison and McKinley with more to come.
