Mrs. Leegan's Holocaust and Genocide Studies Class created a mural to represent the books that they read this semester. Students selected books that were donated by The Westfield Jewish Heritage Project. The Westfield Jewish Heritage Project was created in 2024 for the purpose of enhancing the local Westfield public schools and the Westfield Memorial Library with books of important Jewish and Israeli themes. Students created the mural as a part of the culminating activity for the lit circle project.

Sami Steigmann, a Holocaust survivor, spoke to Mrs. Leegan's Holocaust and Genocide Studies class. Mr. Steigmann was a child during the Holocaust and was not aware he was a survivor until later in his life. Sami was born on December 21, 1939 in Bukovina, part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire belonging to Romania, it became part of the former Soviet Union and today is in Ukraine. From 1941-44, he was with his parents in a labor camp called Transnistria. His parents listed him as too young to work, so he was subjected to Nazi medical experimentation. He and his family were eventually liberated by the Red Army.

This week, students in Mrs. Luis and Mr. Travis' Global Perspectives classes engaged in a challenging and insightful simulation of the conditions faced by the Renaissance master, Michelangelo, while painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Students were tasked with drawing an image while lying on the floor, using the underside of their desks as their "ceiling." To increase the difficulty and realism, they were instructed to hold their paper up with no external support, simulating the constant physical strain and uncomfortable positioning Michelangelo endured.
