Halloween Field Day Fun! MCK's PTO organizes fun, Halloween-specific games for students in the AM before our PM parade!




Learning happens in communal spaces! One of the best parts of the 22-23 school year is our return to our communal spaces for learning. In ELA, we start at the carpet for direct instruction, sharing read alouds of mentor texts, and planning our work during reading and writing workshop. In the first picture, a 2nd grader returns to her 1st grade classroom to read aloud.

5th graders use comic strip pre-writing to paint the picture for their narrative stories, and to plan out the sequencing of events as well as character interactions.



A full day of professional learning taking place during today's in-service for staff.




Students in Ms. Myers' class solve real world problems in Social Studies! These groups worked on solving the problems of too much trash on the ground, finding dogs when they get lost, and dealing with potential flooding! At this stage of the project, they're building and decorating their models.



Schools are closed on Monday, October 10. Staff will have an in-service day.

McKinley students mismatch their clothes during the Week of Extra Respect to highlight how we appreciate each other's differences. Today we encouraged all students to look at our "Welcome" bulletin board, which says "Hello" in over 20 languages - representing all of the countries where our students were born. It's our differences that make us a community that is so together!




October 2 is National Custodian Day. We're grateful to these dedicated professionals who work hard to keep our buildings and grounds clean and safe. When we asked students if our custodians are superheroes, the answer was a resounding "YES!" https://youtu.be/wp716Z8C2Vo

Reading and Writing Workshop are up and running in 1st and 2nd grade! Our students are involved in building their reading and writing stamina, choosing "just right" books, and working through the entire writing process.




Earlier this month, McKinley 4th graders in Ann Minski's class utilized creativity and kindness to decorate Color-a-Smile coloring pages as part of National Day of Service (9/11). The colorful pages were distributed to nursing homes and hospitals to cheer the residents.
