We are so proud of all of the fifth graders who worked hard to research and submit an Exploravision project. One project also received Honorable Mention. According to Exploravision: “The Honorable Mention award places a team's project among the top 10% of all ExploraVision projects submitted to the competition this year. These students are commended for a job well done in demonstrating innovative thinking in their exploration of science and its impact on technology and the future.” Congratulations to Emaia Green-Ezidiegwu & Rhea Shukla for receiving Honorable Mention for their invention, Nature Gardening Robot Dog.

While most students prefer outdoor recess, indoor recess is a good time to relax with classmates. A game of cards, Jenga or creating something with Legos is always fun! Some students used their time today to create posters for the Earth Day poster contest!

Our teachers and students have been discussing common coping strategies. Coping strategies help us do hard things and make us stronger! Mrs. Pepe created a March Madness style competition. Students are voting for their "go to" strategies. The Sweet Sixteen is now down to the Elite 8. What are your most effective ways to cope with challenges? Which one will win it all?

1-H went outside for their science unit about sound. The beautiful weather gave them a great setting for listening to outdoor sounds and their sources. Back inside the classroom they explored how to make loud and soft sounds using xylophones in small groups.

These two Franklin leaders made this announcement today to get the ball rolling!! March Madness: Coping Skills. Get ready, because Franklin School Rocks at Coping Skills! This month we are kicking off our very own March Madness of Coping Skills tournament! In the end, we’ll find out which coping strategy is Franklin’s favorite. Just like in a basketball tournament, different strategies will face off in exciting match-ups. For example, you might vote for using a fidget vs. deep breathing, or taking a walk vs. listening to music. Today begins our Sweet 16 - Each class will get a chance to vote on the match-ups. Make sure your votes are in by Wednesday at the end of the day! We will be announcing the winners of each round and filling in our big bracket outside of room 218, so be sure to check it out and see which coping strategies are moving on to the next round.

Second grade students learned about artists Wayne Thiebaud and contemporary artists Kenny Scharf, Jae Yong Kim, and Rommy de Bommy, who create fun artwork inspired by sweet treats.

Students used Model Magic to sculpt their own donuts while practicing clay techniques such as rolling the clay into a ball, forming a snake shape, pinching and pulling, and adding color with markers. They could also decorate their donuts with details like drizzle or sprinkles. Some students even made paper boxes and designed labels or bakery logos for their creations.

These donuts look good enough to eat!

Using coping strategies makes us stronger!

Mrs. Pepe, our counselor, created a fun way for teachers and students to talk about coping strategies. With March Madness on the horizon, students are voting for the strategies that they use most.

Coping Skills Sweet 16

Coping strategies help when we have big feelings. They can help us calm down, feel safe, and get ready to handle challenges--making us more resilient! Think about which coping strategy helps you the most. Then vote for your favorite in each match-up! Will your favorite become Franklin’s Coping Strategy Champion? Here is the slideshow in case you would like to reinforce any of these at home!

5th grade students began this unit by creating an animal portrait through drawing or collage. In the next stage, they added a sculptural element to their work. Students were challenged to transform their original animal designs into relief artworks using a variety of materials. To bring their animals to life, they incorporated paint, paint markers, ribbon, paper clay, cardboard, and other mixed media. The result was a collection of creative and expressive animal reliefs that showcase both artistic skill and imagination.

Jake, one of our 5th grade leaders, made an announcement on the loudspeaker today to promote Youth Art Month--a quote from Andy Warhol.

"Don't think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it's good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art."

Teachers often provide a little positive reinforcement for good behaviors and hard-work. That can range from a simple compliment to some extra time outside, board games or a PJ day. Occasionally teachers go big. 3P had a slime event! Looks very slimy!
