Edison Intermediate School is a vibrant family of learners; one where students and faculty are challenged to inquire, investigate, and think deeply about things that matter in their world. Edison is also a collaborative community where students, teachers, administrators, support one another in our collective journey in learning. 

Learning is at the heart of what we do at Edison School.  Student learning focuses on two primary areas.  Students focus on both learning academic skills and how to be empathetic, compassionate and caring members of a community.  Through our focus on academic skills and concepts we strive to enable our students to have a wide array of choices in life.  Through our focus on the affective development of students we endeavor to develop people who find value in service to community and social justice. 

Edison School uses many paths and programs to provide our students with an excellent education and engaging middle school experience.  The quality education that students receive at Edison School can be attributed to any number of variables, however, we tend to believe it is the confluence of these variables that makes Edison a wonderful place for adolescent learners. 

Our Faculty & Staff
The people that make up Edison School are the ones who truly make a difference in the lives of students.  Edison School consists of 81 highly qualified teachers, 5 custodians, 3 secretaries, numerous paraprofessionals, 7 district subject supervisors, 1 assistant principal, and 1 principal.  The entire faculty and staff work together to design challenging learning experiences and support systems for our students.

Our Curriculum
The Westfield Public Schools has developed a middle school curricula that is developmentally appropriate and specifically designed to meet the needs and pique the interest of middle school students.  The students at Thomas Alva Edison Intermediate School continue to grow academically in 6th, 7th and 8th grade teams. Our highly professional staff deliver a challenging curriculum using research-based instructional methods and best practices.  Each day students experience the five core academic subjects of language arts literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, and world language.  In addition to the core courses, students also experience classes in music, art, public speaking, technology, physical education, and industrial technology. 

Our Commitment to Service and Character Development
Students at Edison School adhere to three very basic principles: Take Care of Yourself, Take Care of Each Other, and Take Care of Our School.  These principles guide our daily interactions and long range goals.  We believe that through living diverse lives and valuing the differences that individuals bring to our school, students will learn to respect and cherish diversity.  Edison School’s Student Government Association is an excellent example of these principles in action. The SGA is a student directed organization that plans and facilitates dozens of school and community wide events each year.   

Additionally, Edison's Advisory program provides students with a framework to support Social Emotional Learning and the building of positive character traits.  During the 2023-2024 school year, the focus of our monthly Advisory lessons will develop our students' capacity to employ the five SEL competencies of Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision-Making.  Each month students will take part in an Advisory group and classroom lessons that target these five competencies.  

Our Approach to Teaming
Teaming is a critical component of the way we educate the whole child.  At Edison interdisciplinary teams exist to support students’ academic development and social/emotional well being.  At the beginning of each year students are assigned to one of two teams at their grade level.  Interdisciplinary teams are made up of teachers representing the five core disciplines, a special education teacher, and the grade level school counselor.  Interdisciplinary teams of teachers meet weekly to plan for instruction, discuss students, and develop differentiated instructional strategies to meet the needs of individual learners. 

Our Belief in Adult Learning
To truly provide our students with an outstanding 21st Century education, the faculty and administration of Edison understand that we must also continuously hone our craft through investing in our own learning.  Edison School teachers and administrators are enrolled in graduate study programs and regularly take part in in-district and out-of-district professional development workshops.  In addition to formal course work, Edison School teachers and administrators enhance their craft through common and collaborative planning teams.  Each grade level teacher participates in weekly collaborative planning meetings with the other teachers in their discipline.  During these meetings, teachers identify the standards they expect their students to attain, develop learning experiences, craft assessments to evaluate student performance, analyze student performance, and plan ways to differentiate instruction for those students who still require greater assistance as well as those who require a greater challenge.
