The Westfield World Language Program provides students essential knowledge and skills to contribute to a global society. The study of a world language enables students to communicate effectively with people of different cultures and to appreciate those cultures, both modern and ancient. Studying a language other than their own also enables students to learn different modes of thinking and different ways of organizing human societies. Because of the cultural and linguistic experiences a world language offers, proficiency in a world language allows students an understanding of the roots of their own language and culture, and thereby enables them to be informed members of a global society.

Formal language instruction in Westfield begins in third grade. These elementary students receive thirty-minutes per week of instruction in Spanish. Our fourth and fifth grade students receive one hour per week (two thirty-minute session) of instruction in Spanish. The elementary Spanish program emphasizes active student participation in order to develop listening and speaking skills in a language other than English. Emphasis is also placed on an understanding and appreciation of the relationship between the Spanish language and its cultures.

Once students reach our intermediate schools, they are given the option to continue Spanish study or they may elect to study French. Language classes meet daily for a full-class period. Our students are exposed to increasing levels of language instruction in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. These courses prepare our language learners for future language studies.

Westfield High School offers study in five languages: French, Italian, Latin, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. We encourage students to further their knowledge of their respective languages beyond the classroom. There are extra-curricular clubs and cultural activities offered to language students throughout the school year. We encourage students to prepare and sit for national language competitions and exams.

"If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart."
