"What we learn with pleasure we hardly ever forget"  - Alfred Mercier

Welcome to the Computer Lab! The goal of the Computer Education Program at RIS is to improve students' computer skills and enable them to use the computer effectively in their schoolwork, homework and everyday life. All students must understand and be comfortable with the concepts and applications of technology. In order to function in today's complex society, and become informed and productive adults, students need to use technology to locate, summarize, organize, synthesize, and evaluate information. The ability to select and effectively use technological tools to accomplish the tasks of learning will facilitate academic success. The skills gained in this middle school class will serve as a foundation for developing ever more complex abilities as students and available technologies mature.

Computer skills are taught in the computer lab, which currently has twenty four computers, three laser printers, a scanner, digital cameras and digital video cameras. We operate on a PC platform with Windows XP Professional. Students use the research, editing and publishing skills learned in computer class in class projects and multimedia presentations. All student projects correlate with academic curricula and school goals.

I recently began using Pivot with my 6th grade students. Pivot Stickfigure Animation is a fantastic way to introduce young students to simple stick figure animations. Students create a "story", design frames (similar to a flip book), and add each frame to the project as they proceed. You can add colorful or realistic backgrounds, change object colors, design your own objects, and add text. There are also some pre-designed objects like horses, ladders, and elephants. Once completed, the animations can be saved as .GIF files that can be viewed as animations.
