Read Across America Week
In honor of the great children's book writer, Dr. Seuss, our school will be celebrating Read Across America Week starting on Tuesday, March 2nd. During this week, we will also be sponsoring a school wide book swap. Children are encouraged to bring in up to 5 gently used age appropriate books (grades 1-5) starting on March 2nd. Bins will be located in the school lobby for the collection. All students will be invited to then select 1 book to take home with them on either March 11th or 12th during their class's scheduled time. The remaining books will then be donated to School 12 in Paterson so the children there also have a chance to take home some great books! SNAC Nutrition Appreciation Week is the week of March 8-12,2010. All students in all grades will be participating in the Spring Nutrition Appreciation program. Look on the SNAC tab for more information. This week volunteers on the SNAC committee taught Nutrition Appreciation lessons to all grades through fun, interactive activities. First and Second Grades learned basic nutrition facts by playing "Nutrition Jeopardy"; Third Grade reinforced these facts with the " Food Pyramid Party" card game; Fourth Grade learned more detailed nutrition information in "My Pyramid Pursuit" while Fifth Grade learned about the link between nutrition and sports through "Sports Nutrition Baseball". We'd like to thank all SNAC volunteers, teachers, Mr. Cullen and Mrs. Jensen for making this program possible. Finally, we thank the following stores for donating the delicious snack of assorted vegetables and dressing: Shoprite of Clark, Shoprite of Garwood, Stop & Shop, Westfield Farm, and Costco.

Westfield Schools Budget Byte #1
The hard work of building the 2010-11 budget has begun. As the Administration and Board move forward, the goal of controlling costs while striving for high student achievement continues to be a priority. The most recent data, reported by the Department of Education, demonstrates that Westfield has been very successful in achieving that goal: (1) Westfield's per pupil cost of $11,781 is below the state average of $13,601; (2) Test results remain above average; and (3) 93% of the class of 2009 is attending college. The Administration and the Board of Education will hold the first public presentation on next year's budget on March 9 at 8:00 PM at 302 Elm Street in Room 105.
