Tanner Liou, a student at the Franklin Elementary School in Westfield, was named the first place winner in the 2009 New Jersey State Tar Wars Poster contest. Tar Wars is a tobacco-free education program for children recognized by the American Academy of Family Physicians.
A total of 95.3 percent of this year’s 447 Westfield High School graduates are embarking on the road to higher education this fall. According to a statistical report released by the WHS Office of Counseling Services, 88 percent are entering four-year colleges and universities, while 5.5 percent are attending two-year colleges, and less than 2 percent has entered vocational, business and other post high school institutions.
The Westfield Historic Preservation Commission presented their annual award on December 15 to the Westfield Board of Education in recognition of the school district’s “preservation, restoration and revitalization of Lincoln School.”
Parents and guardians of public school students in Westfield are invited to Back-to-School Nights scheduled in September and October.
An online community survey developed by the Westfield Board of Education will be made available to a random number of Westfield Public School parents and residents of the town the last week in October in preparation of a new strategic plan for the district.
The Westfield Board of Education, at its meeting on August 25, was presented with an environmental stewardship award for its energy conservation program, which is in effect in all 10 schools as well as the administration building. The award recognized that in the first 24 months of Westfield’s program, the district saved 7,590,563 kilowatts per hour (kWh), equivalent to preventing 1,923 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, 345 cars removed from the road, or 49,184 pine trees grown for 10 years.
Westfield residents interested in becoming a member of the Board of Education must file applications by March 1, 2010 to be eligible for the April 20 school election.
Edison Intermediate School students in Westfield captured first place in Union County in both seventh and eighth grade regional competitions in the Math League of New Jersey competition.
Annie Re and Max Sugarman, 2009 graduates of Westfield High School (WHS), have been presented the 2009 Ellen Maher Volunteer Award, given by BRIDGES Outreach, a Summit-based organization dedicated to serving the homeless and hungry through volunteerism.
A total of 134 Westfield High School (WHS) students earned the designation of AP Scholar in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college level Advanced Placement Exams, and 56 perfect SAT scores of "800" were achieved by WHS students.

A total of 23 new teachers and support staff as well as four new administrators were welcomed to the Westfield Public Schools this school year.
All parents in Westfield and students in intermediate and high school are invited to attend "Stir It Up," a drug/alcohol awareness program, Wednesday evening, November 11, from 7 - 9 PM at Westfield High School, 550 Dorian Road.
"Stir It Up" - the Drug/Alcohol Awareness Program held on November 11 at Westfield High School -- revealed the results of bad choices made by adolescents and their effects on the individual, family, school and entire community.
Roosevelt Intermediate School students in Westfield raised more than $11,000, the largest fundraising effort by all middle and high schools in the state, toward the charity designated by the New Jersey Association of Student Councils (NJASC).
Westfield High School incoming seniors Jennifer Eisenberg and Sophie Green have completed their multi-week sessions in the selective New Jersey Governor’s Schools.
More than 2,500 students are rehearsing for a total of 19 winter concerts that are scheduled in the Westfield Public Schools through February 10.
At the Bucks County One Act Play Festival in New Hope, PA, Westfield High School students received 15 individual "Certificates of Excellence" for various roles in the four One Acts presented as well as three of the six most prestigious awards.
In recognition of academic excellence, leadership, service and character, 127 Juniors and 4 Seniors from Westfield High School were inducted into the National Honor Society.
